Should you convert JPG to APNG?

Worth it when an app or an editor needs APNG, or before you edit the picture several times. APNG won’t restore the detail JPG already threw away, and the file will be larger, but nothing more is lost from here on.

Bear in mind APNG is opens in current browsers and apps: it works in every current browser and Telegram stickers; most image editors show only the first frame.

JPG is a lossy photo format that trades detail you can’t see for much smaller files; APNG is a PNG that animates, with full color and soft transparency. Use APNG for small animated graphics on the web where GIF’s color banding or jagged edges would show.

What changes when JPG becomes APNG

APNG can’t add back what JPG removed

The JPG was compressed when it was saved, and that detail is gone. APNG records exactly what the JPG contains now, compression marks included, and keeps it that way however often you edit and re-save.

Expect a much larger file

APNG is far bigger for the same content. Choose it because something needs APNG, not to send or store the file. JPG: A 12-megapixel phone photo is usually 2–5 MB. APNG: Larger than a GIF of the same animation, but in full color.

Why it doesn’t upload

Changing a picture’s format is work your browser already knows how to do. Sending your photos to a server first only adds waiting and risk, so nothing is sent.

How to check for yourself

  • About the JPG. Re-saving a JPG again and again degrades it, because each save compresses the already compressed version. Keep an original and export to JPG once, at the end.
  • About the APNG. An APNG usually still ends in .png, so an upload form or editor treats it as a still picture and the animation silently disappears.
  • DDS, PSD, EXR, XWD and JPEG 2000 are read by the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.

Will converting JPG to APNG lose quality?

No further quality is lost: APNG keeps exactly what is in the JPG. It can’t undo compression the JPG already has.

Will the APNG be smaller than the JPG?
